Overview

On June 2, 2010, the Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde and the charge to external peer reviewers were released for external peer review and public comment. The Toxicological Review and charge were reviewed internally by EPA and by other federal agencies and White House Offices before public release. In the new IRIS process, introduced by the EPA Administrator, all written comments on IRIS assessments submitted by other federal agencies and White House Offices will be made publicly available. Accordingly, interagency comments and the interagency science consultation draft of the IRIS Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde and the charge to external peer reviewers are posted on this site.

Background

The draft toxicological review of formaldehyde - inhalation assessment provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic inhalation exposure to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is present in a wide variety of products including some plywood adhesives, abrasive materials, insulation, insecticides and embalming fluids. The major sources of anthropogenic emissions of formaldehyde are motor vehicle exhaust, power plants, manufacturing plants that produce or use formaldehyde or substances that contain it (i.e. glues), petroleum refineries, coking operations, incinerating, wood burning and tobacco smoke.

History/Chronology

Date	Description
01- Sep 1990	The oral RfD for formaldehyde was posted to the IRIS database.
02- May 1991	The cancer assessment for formaldehyde was posted to the IRIS database.
03- Jan 1998	EPA begins the formaldehyde reassessment under the IRIS Program.
04- May 2010	EPA initiated an interagency science consultation on the review of the draft Toxicological Review of formaldehyde.
05- Jun 2010	EPA released an external review draft of the formaldehyde reassessment for public review and comment. Also released was the interagency review draft with comments.

Status

Following external peer review the assessment will be revised taking into consideration external peer review and public comments. It will then undergo a final EPA internal review and a review by other federal agencies and White House offices, followed by posting to the IRIS Web site.
