Overview

On February 26-27th, 2004, the National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA), a part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Research and Development, held a two-day public symposium on recently published scientific research related to the health effects of trichloroethylene (TCE). The primary purpose of this symposium was to gather information on recently published scientific research for use by EPA in assessing the human health risks of TCE. EPA used this meeting at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, to hear from the scientists who are at the forefront of TCE Research.

Background

An EPA draft Trichloroethylene Health Risk Assessment: Synthesis and Characterization was released in August 2001. It received public comment as well as peer review by EPA’s Science Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB released a peer review report in December 2002.

Additional Information

Symposium Details

The symposium consisted of a series of invited presentations by a number of researchers from a variety of scientific fields who had published scientific findings related to the health effects of TCE. Because of the volume of published research, and due to funding and timing limitations, this symposium necessarily presents selected important new scientific research. The focus of this symposium is published primary research, and no summary or conclusions are being sought about the health risks of TCE.

Next Steps
EPA prepared a transcript of the speakers' presentations and the question/answer sessions were included on this website. The science information obtained from this Symposium and the information available in the peer reviewed literature was used by EPA as they revises its draft TCE human health risk assessment (see related link). This revised draft assessment will subsequently be the subject of peer review by an expert panel, which we anticipate will be convened by the National Academy of Sciences.
